We assist businesses by giving them extra space for their inventory and store seasonal items. We make it convenient to keep needed equipment on a work site.
A.B. Richards Makes Things More Convenient
We work every day to make life more convenient for all of our customers at A.B. Richards. But we’re also proud when we see examples of how portable storage units make life better for people. One particularly inspiring example has been the rise of shipping containers being repurposed as medical facilities. These facilities are helping underserved areas around the nation and around the world. While A.B. Richards is a rental company and we can’t allow you to take one of our portable storage containers and turn it into a medical clinic, but we want to tell you about the good work of people who’ve done just that.
Transforming Portable Storage Containers into Clinics
A hotspot for creating containers out of portable storage units is Topeka, Kansas. That is the home of Clinic in a Can a company that repurposes portable storage units into medical facilities. They’ve created clinics in the US and all over the world including Ecuador, Haiti, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Kenya, South Sudan, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines, according to the company website.
The company creates several types of clinics including clinics that can be used as a facility for primary care physicians to diagnose common illnesses. They also make emergency and trim units which are clean and secure environments for patients who need critical care. The company also creates infective disease units to control diseases and quarantine patients if necessary.
It’s not just companies putting together storage container medical facilities. American universities have also supported similar projects. In 2015, Texas A & M, students from a service organization called BUILD repurposed four shipping containers into mobile medical clinics for use in Africa and Central America as well as to help Syrian refugees in Greece.
“We designed as much of an open canvas as possible so the clinic space can be customized for different situations,” said student Paul McCoy who was on the design and build team. “The clinics will be transported to four different countries with different medical needs, demographics, and cultures.”
At the University of Michigan, members of the university’s medical and architectural schools built an ophthalmology clinic which opened in Jamaica in 2016.
“As designers, we’re interested in what you can do to make the (clinic) not a container and how you can produce additional possibilities both for how it’s used by the community,” said Geoffrey Thun, associate professor of architecture told the Michigan Daily.
